Guido Molinari : The Coulour of Memory

The film is co-directed by Nicola Zavaglia and Donald Winkler. Over a period of three months, between September and December, 2003, the two directors paid a series of visits to artist Guido Molinari in his east end Montreal studio. In the course of these encounters Molinari spoke freely of his childhood, his artistic convictions, and his sense of his own mortality.

The film unfolds as a kind of journal, month to month, while outside the studio in the artist’s neighbourhood the seasons gradually change. As the weeks pass the artist bids farewell to some of his paintings, friends and colleagues make their appearance, and we are treated to ravishing images drawn from the artist’s work over half a century, plus rare footage of Molinari creating a canvas, while in his prime.

The film is an intimate, meditative farewell from a figure known for his passionate iconoclasm. Guido Molinari passed away shortly after the completion of shooting, in February, 2004.

The film is produced by Ari A. Cohen and written and narrated by Donald Winkler, edited and filmed by Nicola Zavaglia, with additional photography by Philippe Lavalette. Music is by Judith Gruber-Stitzer.
